For cancer patient, covering the head is important to protect sensitive scalp from damage. The main reason which requires covering the head is protection against environmental factors like hot and cold weathers. Covering of head is also necessary other than patients but in these situations no extra care is required. But, for patients and especially cancer patients there are some factors which we must kept in mind. Though hats for cancer patients are a best solution for covering the head and scarves for cancer patients are also available but selection is utmost important. If you think that traditional caps and hats which we use in daily life can suffice the cancer patient’s requirements, it’s a wrong thinking. Nature of skin of a normal healthy individual and a patient with cancer is too much different. Normally we use fancy and stylish hats and do not care for the material used in these hats. But when you are selecting a hat or scarf for a cancer patient, you must be vigilant.
Scarves and hats for cancer patients are made of specific cotton clothe which keeps the skin cool during hot weather and worm in winter where traditional scarves and hats are usually silk made and their effect is contradictory to the cancer patient’s hat and scarf. Silky material causes damage to skin and can results to boils and rashes over the skin. Rashes and boils are harmful for cancer patients who need additional treatment and during treatment of these rashes cancer treatment needs to be discontinued.
After hair loss by Chemo therapy, covering of head in necessary but the above mentioned hazards cannot be ignored. The best solution for covering head is a wig with cotton made cap but if wig is causing itching, it should be replaced with suitable hat or scarf. If these items are not available, head can also be covered with simple and clean piece of clothe but make sure that clothe should be made of cotton.
